Floods in Pakistan
– Relief Assistance Appeal (August – September 2011) In the wake of recent flooding caused by
heavy rains in Pakistan the government has made an international appeal to the
secretary general of the United Nations, governments of the friendly countries
and the Pakistani community abroad for relief assistance. While the rains have caused havoc across Pakistan,
areas in Sindh and our brethren there have been worst affected. Five million
people have been displaced, a million houses have been either damaged or
completely washed away and millions of dollars worth of standing crops have been destroyed. Damage assessment is being carried out
by the government and the international agencies concerned. Water related health problems’
onslaught has made the situation worse. The High Commission is in contact with the
concerned quarters in Pakistan to coordinate relief assistance. According to the latest, following Relief
Goods are urgently required: § Tents § Blankets
§ Food
items (preferably dried tin packed or packed) § Water
purification kits & tablets § Medicines
for:
i. Malaria
ii. Eye
infections
iii. Skin
