Road named after Iqbal in UK

 

London: With strenuous efforts of Pakistani diaspora in Oldham, Greater Manchester area, local borough council has named a major road in Oldham as ‘Allama Iqbal Road’. It is, perhaps, the first road in England named after the Great Poet.

 

To thank Oldham Borough Council, Organization of Pakistani intellectuals and writers the Circle of Literary Friends, in cooperation with Oldham Library, organized a programme to celebrate 72nd anniversary of Allama Muhammad Iqbal in Oldham on 2nd May 2010. Pakistan’s Consul General in Manchester Mr. Ehsan Ullah Batth was invited as the chief Guest on the occasion, which was attended by a large number of the Pakistani Community.

 

While thanking the Oldham Borough Council, Mr. Batth highlighted the importance of such steps in promoting cultural harmony and understanding among the various communities.

 

On the occasion, a new book on the poetry of a local poet Mr. Sabir Raza, edited by Dr. A.K. Shakoor, was also launched, followed by a ‘Mushairah’.
