LONDON:  Highlighting the work of charities towards ameliorating the suffering of the disadvantaged people, Pakistan High Commissioner to the UK Wajid Shamsul Hasan urged for generous donations to such organisations engaged in noble endeavours. Speaking at a reception hosted here on Wednesday evening at the High Commission in support of ‘Focus’ charity under the patronage of Mayor and Mayoress of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, he said many British charities were working in Pakistan in various fields such as health, education and women’s uplift to better the lives of the poor section of the society.

The High Commissioner pointed out the role of charities in time of natural disasters and mentioned their contributions during the 2005 Kashmir quake, 2004 Asian Tsunami and the recent earthquake in Haiti.

He lauded the efforts of Mayor Timothy Coleridge in promoting his charitable work and hoped that wealthy British-Pakistanis residing in the Borough of Kensington and Chelsea would continue to patronise ‘Focus’ charity.

The High Commissioner announced a personal donation of five hundred pounds sterling for the charity.

Councillor Coleridge explained the objectives of the charity and said as the tradition goes every Mayor is supposed to patronise either a local or national charity during his one-year-mayoral tenure.

He thanked the High Commissioner for hosting the event in collaboration with the Kensington and Chelsea Town Council and said this was the first time that any foreign mission located within the Borough has organised such an event.
