Wajid for
generous donations to charities
LONDON: Highlighting the work of
charities towards ameliorating the suffering of the disadvantaged people,
Pakistan High Commissioner to the UK Wajid Shamsul Hasan urged for generous
donations to such organisations engaged in noble endeavours. Speaking at a
reception hosted here on Wednesday evening at the High Commission in support
of ‘Focus’ charity under the patronage of Mayor and Mayoress
of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, he said many British charities
were working in Pakistan in various fields such as health, education and
women’s uplift to better the lives of the poor section of the society.
He noted that British-Pakistani community
has been generous giver of donations not only in their land of origin but also
helping the needy in Britain as well.
The High Commissioner pointed out the role of charities in time of natural
disasters and mentioned their contributions during the 2005 Kashmir quake, 2004
Asian Tsunami and the recent earthquake in Haiti.
He lauded the efforts of Mayor Timothy Coleridge in promoting his charitable
work and hoped that wealthy British-Pakistanis residing in the Borough of
Kensington and Chelsea would continue to patronise ‘Focus’ charity.
The High Commissioner announced a personal donation of five hundred pounds
sterling for the charity.
Councillor Coleridge explained the objectives of the charity and said as the
tradition goes every Mayor is supposed to patronise either a local or national
charity during his one-year-mayoral tenure.
He thanked the High Commissioner for hosting the event in collaboration with
the Kensington and Chelsea Town Council and said this was the first time that
any foreign mission located within the Borough has organised such an event.
A five-minute video on the work of ‘Focus’ working within the
Royal Borough was also shown on the occasion. The charity Director
Jeremy Raphaely explained its objectives.
Councillor Mushtaq Lasharie also spoke on the
occasion and said like Pakistan, the UK has also many poor and needy people who
need help and assistance to better their lives and become a
responsible citizens.
