Pakistan elected member of ILO body

 

GENEVA : Pakistan was elected member of the Governing Body of International Labour Organization (ILO) by obtaining 192 out of 215 votes. The elections were held during the annual Conference of ILO taking place at its headquarters in Geneva.

 

The 181-member International Labour Conference (ILC), also known as “international parliament of labour”, is the highest standard-setting international body. It has a tri-partite structure with governments, workers and employers as its constituents.

 

Pakistan has consistently been a member of the ILO’s Governing Body since 1990. This is the highest Executive Forum within the Organization which takes decisions on ILO’s policy and adopts conventions on labour standards throughout the world.

 

Pakistan lays highest importance to the improvement of labour situation and provision of decent working conditions for all. Immediately after assuming office, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani repealed the Industrial Relations Ordinance (IRO 2002), which imposed restrictions on labour activities.  

 

The Prime Minister has also set minimum wage limit to Rs. 6000/-. The Prime Minister has announced a 100-day Roadmap, which embraces the empowering nature of rights at work and is founded on the centrality of rights at work and of social protection.

 

Pakistan is actively involved in the further improvement of its labour sector through cooperation and coordination with the ILO.
