Prime Minister Gordon Brown calls Pakistan a key ally with which Britain shares a long-standing
friendship and shared history
In a joint press conference with President Pervez
Musharraf on 28 January 2008 at 10 Downing Street, Prime Minister Gordon Brown
called Pakistan a “key ally in combating terrorism” with which Britain shared a
“long-standing friendship and shared history”. Brown acknowledged the role of
President Pervez Musharraf in uniting the forces of moderation in the country
and tackling extremist and terrorist groups throughout the region.
Prime Minister Brown said the links between Pakistan and Britain
are strong and the vibrant Pakistani community in Britain “reminds us of our
long-standing friendship and our shared history”.
He said that Britain
would want to have better trading relationships and maximum economic
cooperation, adding that Britain
would want a world trade agreement that helps countries like Pakistan.
In his remarks, President Pervez Musharraf thanked Prime
Minister Brown for showing strong desire to enhance bilateral relationship and
cooperation between the United Kingdom
and Pakistan.
President Musharraf expressed his gratitude to the British leadership to
enhance assistance to Pakistan
in the socio-economic sector, especially in the area of education.
